One of the most identifiable aspects of the Craftsman style home is a low-pitched roof that overhangs the exterior walls of a home. Many times, these large overhangs are accented with exposed rafters and brackets. This style is known for the thick trim used to accent the windows and doors. Exterior materials are mostly lap and shingle siding with wainscots of stone or brick. Large front porches are highlighted by short tapered columns that sit upon stone or brick pediments. Inside, the floor plans can be open for large gatherings or more broken up according to function. Living areas are normally designed around a large fireplace and mantle with flanking bookcases or window seats. Boxed beams bring attention to ceilings. The emphasis on natural wood trim inside makes the Craftsman among some of the most admired architectural styles.
